A Struggle for a New Life, Part II: Society, Fortification & Education

Edmond Melhem

In our assessment, there can be no genuine hope of rescuing this nation from the fate of decay and extinction unless society is equipped with the elements of strength and resilience and fortified by the weapon of national consciousness—namely, awareness of the reality of our shared life and of the necessity of unity in confronting the dangers that threaten our collective existence. National consciousness constitutes the living conscience of the nation and its unifying spiritual bond, binding the community in a unity of life and a unity of destiny. It propels society toward cohesion, fraternity, tolerance, and harmony, and toward a pure national solidarity that generates cooperation for the elevation and preservation of shared life.

The fortification of society begins with its liberation from psychological maladies, social afflictions, and all anti-national cultures that corrode its inner vitality—such as cultures of surrender and defeatism, isolation and hostility, as well as cultures of favouritism, chaos, corruption, deceit, irresponsibility, dependency, and indifference. These patterns collectively undermine social trust, weaken communal bonds, and obstruct the conditions necessary for national recovery.

Fortification further requires the reform of social conditions, the revival of civic virtues, and the activation of internal strengths, so that society may become strong and cohesive, productive, accomplished, and immune to both material deprivation and political dependency. Such a society is one in which the citizen lives in freedom, dignity, prosperity, and well-being, and directs his or her efforts toward collective advancement rather than toward social disintegration and national ruin.

At its foundation, the fortification of society is achieved through sound and noble education: through the psychological and civic formation of the human being, the enrichment of moral consciousness, and the development of creative capacities. Education, in this sense, is a comprehensive process of cultural, psychological, and social preparation. It constitutes the cornerstone of forming upright generations and of constructing a society founded upon justice, equality, and stability. Indeed, generations cannot be properly built without ideal values, scientific rational thinking, and a moral doctrine free of delusions—a doctrine of peace that alone offers a viable path for rescuing the nation from the quagmire of violence and division and elevating it toward the horizons of an integrated national life: the life of a single, strong society unified by its productive forces in agriculture, industry, and thought, and consolidated by a common will to live.
